How can we safely use an ultrasonic sonicator to process temperature sensitive samples?

The following steps and recommendations can be followed to safely use an ultrasonic sonicator to process temperature sensitive samples:

Choose a device with an integrated temperature controller: Ensure that the ultrasonic sonicator used has an integrated temperature controller so that it can automatically stop working when the sample temperature reaches a preset limit (e.g. 30°C) to avoid overheating and damage to the sample.

Utilizing pulse control technology: the design of the individual pulse switches allows temperature-sensitive samples to be processed with high intensity and safety by controlling the on and off cycles of the pulses (1 to 59 seconds). This approach allows the user to adjust the pulse duration as needed to accommodate different types of samples.

Setting the appropriate processing time and amplitude: Select the appropriate on and off cycle times (adjustable from 1 second to 99 minutes) according to the specific requirements of the sample and utilize the automatic amplitude compensation feature to ensure that the probe amplitude remains stable during sonication, avoiding any additional pressure or temperature rise on the sample due to changes in loading.

Maintain a uniform processing temperature: If possible, select systems that maintain a uniform processing temperature in a water bath environment, which is particularly important for temperature-sensitive biological samples.

Monitor and control the temperature range: Ensure that the ultrasonic device is capable of monitoring and controlling the temperature range of the sample between 1-100°C to protect the sample from temperature damage by automatically stopping the operation if the temperature exceeds a preset value.

Consider non-contact operation: For particularly sensitive samples, consider using non-contact ultrasound techniques, such as near-field traveling wave methods, which are less stable but can reduce the problem of temperature rise due to strong ultrasound.
